1.Acceptance of Terms

These Terms of Service ("Terms") form a legally binding agreement between you and LangGrove ("we," "us," or "our") regarding your use of the LangGrove browser extension and the reader tool at reader.langgrove.com (collectively, the "Service"). By installing, using, or accessing the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not install or use the Service.

2.Description of the Service

The Service highlights your saved vocabulary words on webpages, PDFs, EPUBs, DOCX, HTML, Markdown, TXT files, or other documents, displays pronunciation above each word, and shows a translation/definition below it. You can add personal notes to highlighted words, toggle highlighting/translation/pronunciation on or off, and customize highlight, translation, and pronunciation colors.

All vocabulary saving, highlighting, note-taking, file processing (via reader.langgrove.com), toggles, and color customizations occur locally in your browser. Uploaded files are processed entirely on your device and never uploaded to our servers. This version has no cloud synchronization — your vocabulary, notes, files, settings, and all related data never leave your device and are never sent to our servers.

We offer tiered subscription plans. Free users receive basic functionality with a suggested soft limit (e.g., up to 200 highlighted words). Paid plans (Basic/Pro) unlock higher or unlimited highlighting limits and additional features. All usage limits for the free tier are enforced client-side only on your device. We do not monitor, collect, or enforce any usage limits on our servers.

3.Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age in your jurisdiction) to use the Service. By using the Service, you represent that you meet this requirement.

4.Accounts and Subscriptions

Paid features require a cloud account authenticated via Google OAuth ("Sign in with Google"). By using Google OAuth, you authorize LangGrove to receive your email address and basic profile information from Google solely for account creation, subscription linking, and feature access. We do not store your Google credentials or access other Google services.

We use Polar.sh as our Merchant of Record to process all subscriptions and payments.

5.Payments and Subscriptions

All payments and subscriptions are handled exclusively by Polar.sh (Polar Software Inc.), which acts as the Merchant of Record. When you subscribe:

• You will be redirected to Polar's secure checkout.
• Polar collects and processes your payment information directly. We do not store your full payment card details.
• Polar handles taxes, invoicing, refunds, and compliance.
• Upon successful payment, Polar notifies us via secure webhooks with your subscription status (plan tier and expiry).

Subscriptions auto-renew unless cancelled through your Polar customer portal. Pricing and features are shown at checkout and may change with notice. Refunds follow Polar's policies. By subscribing, you also agree to Polar's Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.

6.License

We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Service for personal, non-commercial language-learning purposes, subject to these Terms. Free-tier limits are enforced client-side only.

7.Local Data and Extreme Privacy

Your saved words, pronunciations, translations, notes, uploaded files processed in reader.langgrove.com, toggles, color customizations, and all related data remain 100% under your control and are stored/processed only on your device. We never collect, access, transmit, or store any vocabulary data, notes, word counts, file contents, settings, or usage metrics. When the Service fetches your subscription plan status, it sends only your authenticated account identifier (derived from Google OAuth) — no local data of any kind is transmitted.

7.1User Responsibility for Data & Backup

You acknowledge and agree that:

• No Cloud Backups:We do not maintain any server-side copies or backups of your local data.
• User Duty to Export:You are solely responsible for regularly using the Export Function to save your data. We recommend exporting your data before clearing browser cache, updating your operating system, or switching devices.
• Risk of Loss:Data stored locally may be permanently lost if you uninstall the Extension, clear browser "Site Data," or experience hardware failure.
• No Liability:LangGrove shall not be liable for any loss of data, notes, or customizations resulting from your failure to export or back up your information.

7.2Data Export and Format Compatibility

• Primary Purpose:The exported file is primarily designed for data backup and re-importing into LangGrove.
• No Third-Party Guarantee:While JSON is a standard data format, we do not guarantee that the exported file will be natively compatible with, or directly importable into, any third-party software (e.g., Anki, Excel, Notion, or other flashcard apps) without manual conversion.
• Technical Nature:You acknowledge that JSON is a machine-readable format. Opening it in a standard text editor may show structured code rather than a formatted document. We are not responsible for providing technical support for converting or interpreting this data for use in other applications.
• Schema Changes:We reserve the right to modify the JSON structure (schema) in future updates to improve the Service.

8.Prohibited Conduct

• Reverse-engineer, modify, or circumvent the Service;
• Use the Service for illegal or commercial purposes;
• Share or distribute the Service without permission.

9.Intellectual Property

All rights in the Service, code, design, and branding belong to us or our licensors. You receive no ownership rights.

10.Termination

We may suspend or terminate your account or access to paid features for violations of these Terms. You may stop using the Service at any time by uninstalling the Extension or ceasing use of the reader. Local data remains on your device after termination.

11.Disclaimers

The Service is provided "as is" without any warranties. We do not guarantee compatibility with every website, document, or browser, or error-free operation. Highlighting, note functionality, toggles, and color customizations depend entirely on your locally saved words and settings.

12.Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages. Our total liability shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the past 12 months (or US$10 if using the free plan).

13.Indemnification

You agree to indemnify us against any claims arising from your violation of these Terms or misuse of the Service.

14.Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms. Material changes will be notified via the Service, langgrove.com, or email. Continued use after the "Last Updated" date constitutes acceptance.
